Paul, the apostle, said it is witchcraft to turn people from Christ and his finished works to the works of the law. He defined truth as the Christ and his crucifixion (Gal.3:1-2). Hearing these truth is the hearing of faith.
It is foolishness to receive salvation by the spirit of grace and expect to mature as a Christian by the works of the law, that is, by your own strenuous efforts.
What you hear makes you. You become what you hear. Words make or mar. Your ear tastes words like your tongue tastes food. Your ear is the gateway to your soul just as your mouth is the gateway to your stomach. Hearing faith will inspire you towards experiencing and enjoying all that Jesus bought for us on Calvary.
And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
We receive by what we hear, we become by what we hear. We are only limited by what we hear. You actually produce what you hear. This is why Jesus himself warned us to take heed or be careful what we take in through the ear gate, the gate into our soul. What you hear consistently is extremely important to your being.
Don’t open your ears to words that are not gracious (Ecc.10:12) not seasoned with salt (Col. 4:6).
The 2 Hearings
- The hearing of the law
Paul, the apostle that planted the Church in Galatia was very upset that the believers he taught the Gospel of the grace of Christ (Gal.3:1) are now turned away to another gospel (Gal.1:6-9) which is the law. Some teachers after Paul had left came in and bamboozled or in Paul’s language bewitched them into religiosity and legalism putting Christ out. From his words you could tell he was saddened and disappointed.
What hearing the law does
It brings the curse upon those hearing and under it (Gal.3:10): No body can successfully keep the law. It was not given to be kept, it was given to reveal the utter sinfulness of man so that man will embrace Christ. If we could keep the law Jesus wouldn’t have come. Even Moses who gave the law broke it so who else won’t.
Breaking the law brings curses and since no one can fully keep the law then no one who is under it can stay out of curses. This is why we have so many believers going around with curses. The only way of deliverance from the curses is to leave the law not going for special deliverance prayers.
The law veils (2Cor.3:13-16): “In fact, their minds were grown hard and calloused [they had become dull and had lost the power of understanding]; for until this present day, when the Old Testament (the old covenant) is being read, that same veil still lies [on their hearts], not being lifted [to reveal] that in Christ it is made void and done away.
15Yes, down to this [very] day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies upon their minds and hearts.
16But whenever a person turns [in repentance] to the Lord, the veil is stripped off and taken away”.
The law is the strength of sin (1Cor.15:55): “The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law”.
It revives sin (Rom.7:8-11):
The law was instituted as a school master to lead us to Christ and after that we are forever done with it.
2. The Hearing of Faith
A message or teaching does not have to be on the subject of faith for it to be a faith teaching. Any message that points to Christ who is the source, reason, and basis of faith is a faith teaching.
Any teaching that inspires faith in the Gospel message is a faith teaching not withstanding the topic or theme. A teaching that points to self efforts and not Christ is not a faith teaching.
What Faith Teachings does to it Hearers
- It inspires faith (Rom. 10:17)
- It builds (Acts 20:32)
- It delivers your inheritance to you (Acts 20:32)
A Good Example
Acts 14:8-10 King James Version (KJV)
8 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked:
9 The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,
10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.
This man was crippled from birth but as he gave heed to the ‘word of his grace’ (Acts 20:32) he instantly got healed. Faith has no respect to any ailment or condition. It does not matter how long the problem faith will deal with it. Faith corrected what he was born with. This faith comes by hearing Christ and his finished works.
What are you Hearing?
- Milk or Strong Meat (Heb.5:9-14)
- The Letter or the Spirit (2Cor.3:6-17)
- The Gospel of the Grace of Christ or Another Gospel (Gal.1:6-9)
- Are You Mixing it (Matt.9:14-17)
Our Fathers Couldn’t Keep it ( Acts 15:10-11)
Our fathers who were given the law could not keep it what makes us think we can? Even the apostles agreed on this:
Acts 15:10 The Message (MSG)
10-11 “So why are you now trying to out-god God, loading these new believers down with rules that crushed our ancestors and crushed us, too?
The Gospel is the Power
The Gospel is the power of God to the new birth, our healing, miracles, prosperity etc. The Gospel does not have power, it is THE power. Go for the pure milk of of the word, free of religion and condemnation that you may grow in faith (1Pet.2:2). Don’t give your ears to just any word.
The answer is in the Gospel (Lk.4:18).
Listen to the Gospel of the Grace of Christ and believe it and you will see the Gospel power unleashed in your life like a thunderous flood (Isa.53:1; Rom.1:16:17; 1Cor.15:1-4).
